Yesterday afternoon, speakers from nine startups gathered at UW CoMotion HQ to participate in the third DubPitch, an exclusive opportunity for CoMotion startups to pitch their ideas to potential investors in the region. The startups were either recipients of funding from Amazon Catalyst or the CoMotion Innovation Fund, or were members of CoMotion Labs.
The first DubPitch was held last spring, and this time around, the startups were chosen from four fields: Clean Tech, Health, Robotics/Drones, and IT. Each speaker had ten minutes to make their case to the room—to pitch their idea or product, and to outline their plans for future development. Afterwards came a round of speed-dating, when startups and investors got a chance to talk one-and-one.
“DubPitch is an excellent opportunity for our amazing companies to pitch to the strong and supportive investment community,” said Vikram Jandhyala, Executive Director of CoMotion and VP of Innovation Strategy at UW, “CoMotion is all about being an engine of innovation for our region and beyond, and helping the startup community move their innovations to impact.”
“CoMotion DubPitch gave me an opportunity to increase investor exposure for Virvio as we raise capital for our early-stage startup in bioscience. For just a few hours of my time, I now have a couple of investor follow-ups that may turn into actual dollars.”
—— Christopher Pirie, CEO of Virvio
DubPitch is a win-win event which benefits not only the startups but also the investors. “The companies presenting at DubPitch typically have innovations one stage further developed relative to their funding round than companies developing solutions from scratch”, said Ky Calder, a private investor. For him, DubPitch provides exposure to deals based on cutting-edge innovation from some of the world’s leading researchers.
