Working with CoMotion
Mentor journey
I’ve always believed in the idea of paying it forward. My success is largely thanks to the mentors and sponsors that I had throughout my life and career. I started coaching and mentoring as a graduate student at MIT and have sought opportunities to continue mentoring at each stage of my career. I first got engaged with CoMotion when I helped found BlueDot Photonics, a CoMotion spinout.
Advice to innovators
You have to make money if you want to have a successful business. Making money requires finding customers. Your job is not to commercialize your technology. Your job is to solve a customer’s problem, have them pay you to do it, and make a profit.
On the lighter side
Fun anecdote
I-Corps is one of the best programs for would-be entrepreneurs. And before I did one, I was warned that the moderators were tough. About halfway through our I-Corps, I had a heated exchange with one of the instructors about the number of interviews we completed that week. Another instructor had to shut us down. I was fuming. But I didn’t let them get to me. I kept at the customer discovery, eventually pivoting our focus as we got more data. At the end of the program, I was recognized with the Spirit of I-Corps award, given to the teams that demonstrate how to get the most out of the I-Corps experience, despite my argument with the instructor. So, maybe that instructor was actually a psychological genius?

I am a huge Huskies fan and love the University of Washington. I have lots of opinions about lots of things and am always up for a good discussion/debate.
