Applications for the Summer 2026 Idea to Plan are now open.

Join us Wednesday, September 2nd, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at CoMotion (full details upon registration).

Overview

Once you have disclosed your innovation to CoMotion, or joined UW’s faculty, you’re invited to join an immersive in-person workshop as a first step toward commercialization. These workshops are offered four times a year.

You’ll learn about:

  • Commercialization pathways available to researchers like you
  • How to protect your IP and navigate the challenges of public disclosure
  • CoMotion resources available to you, including training, funding, mentorship, and more
  • Tips for commercialization success

Note that space is always limited to the first 30 people to register, with others wait listed.

What participants have said

“Idea to Plan does a great job of translating commercialization into language that researchers already understand, especially by framing customer discovery as hypothesis testing and keeping need statements solution-agnostic. I also really appreciated seeing so many UW colleagues in the room, and the materials have continued to be useful afterward as I work through scenarios in my own project.””

- Adrian KC Lee, ScD, Professor, Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences

“The Idea to Plan workshop really helped me think beyond the science and better understand the business and entrepreneurial side of developing an idea. As someone with limited experience in entrepreneurship, I really appreciated the hands-on activities and how open, approachable, and willing to help all of the mentors were.”

- Sergio Mayta, PhD candidate in UW Department of Chemical Engineering
