143 tech startups track their lineage to the University of Washington
The Washington Tech Universe Map 2026, unveiled this week by the Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA) and its partners during Seattle Tech Week, offers a striking visualization of Washington’s innovation ecosystem, and the connections that continue to shape it. Rather than organizing companies by industry or geography, the map traces founder lineages, illustrating how entrepreneurs move between organizations, launch new ventures, and help fuel the next generation of innovation.
One finding stands out for the University of Washington: UW is second among all founder ecosystems in Washington, with 143 companies—nearly 23% of the 625 companies featured on the map—tracing their founder lineage back to the university. Only Microsoft is higher, with 161 companies. Together, Microsoft, UW, Amazon, and Google account for more than half of all companies represented, underscoring the central role these organizations play in Washington’s innovation economy.
For CoMotion, the University of Washington’s collaborative innovation hub, the map reinforces what we see every day. University researchers, students, clinicians, and alumni are not only pushing the boundaries of science and technology in fields ranging from healthcare and life sciences to clean energy and advanced manufacturing, they are also launching companies, joining startups, mentoring founders, and helping create the connective tissue that drives innovation across our state and beyond.
The map also highlights the importance of collaborations. Nearly 44% of companies on the map were founded by people who worked at two or more Washington organizations before starting their own venture, while 64% trace back to another Washington company already represented on the map. It’s a powerful reminder that thriving innovation ecosystems are built not only on breakthrough ideas, but also on shared experiences, mentorship, and strong community connections.
As the state’s technology ecosystem continues to evolve, the University of Washington remains one of its strongest engines of innovation, educating future founders, advancing transformative research, and translating discoveries into companies that improve lives and strengthen Washington’s economy.
