Meet a CoMotion Labs Member: GMJ Technologies

Written by Debra Bouchegnies / September 25, 2020

Welcome to our blog series, “Meet a CoMotion Labs Member.” These posts offer a peek into the groundbreaking work CoMotion Labs startups do and why they do it here. Stay tuned for profiles about startups innovating in software, IT, fintech, life sciences, biotech, medtech, hardware, prototyping, and nanotechnology. They all work in one of our two physical locations on or near the UW campus — at Fluke Hall and Startup Hall.

What is your startup all about?

GMJ Technologies, Inc. (GMJ) is developing novel and proprietary microscale and high-throughput capillary electrophoresis (CE) and mass spectrometry (MS) for protein analysis. We provide fast, high-performance, easy-to-use, fully-integrated technologies and services that we believe will revolutionize the proteomics and protein-based biologics development industry, which could save lives and decrease healthcare costs.

What problem do you solve?

CE was the workhorse tool that transformed the human genome project and led to the DNA sequencing market. Combination of CE with MS detection (CE-MS) presents great potentials for the analysis of therapeutic proteins and proteomics. However, existing commercial CE-MS platforms have robustness and reliability problems that limits its application for protein analysis. Our CE-MS solution is robust and highly reliable and will improve protein analysis efficiency.

What’s the latest?

GMJ successfully completed its SBIR Phase I project, which is the Small Business Innovation Research seed funding program with the National Science Foundation (NSF). (updated March 2, 2021) We have received our NSF Phase II award of $1M and are commencing this phase of the project.

Startup Advice:

What is key in startup is to identify a true problem to solve, develop a novel solution. Success is a function of the team, timing, and ability to take issues head-on, and work to the root cause.
