The UW College of Engineering recently shared a look back at transformative technologies and research breakthroughs developed by UW researchers whose work has influenced fields ranging from health care and transportation to computing and advanced materials.

Several of the examples highlighted are connected to researchers who have worked with CoMotion on invention disclosure, licensing, startup formation, and other innovation support activities over the years. These include smartphone-based health screening tools developed by UW professors Shwetak Patel and Shyam Gollakota, that led to startup efforts such as Senosis and Sound Life Sciences (acquired by Alphabet and Google respectively), as well as the widely used public transit application OneBusAway.

The article also encourages readers to suggest additional examples of UW engineering impact. One innovation that could be added is Healionics, the Seattle-based biomaterials company co-founded by UW professor Buddy Ratner. The company is focused on improving bloodstream access for dialysis patients, where current grafts often fail due to infection or blockage. Its lead product is designed to resist both issues and is currently in human studies.
